Department of Mass Communication

Introduction

The Department of Mass Communication is one of the departments in the College of Social and Management Sciences [COSOMASS] of Caleb University, Lagos. The Department came into being as a result of the resolve of the management of the University to establish a journalism school that is second to none in Africa.

Prior to the take-of of the Department in the 2009/2010 session, the management of the University set up a committee of Mass Communication experts in 2008 to design the curriculum for the take-of of the Department. The committee members include: Professor Ralph Akinfeleye [2] Professor Idowu Sobowale, [3] Professor Lai Oso, [4] Professor Dayo Alao, [5] Mr. Reuben Abati and [6] Mr. Jimi Kayode. The committee came up with the curriculum presently being used by the Department. It is important to emphasise that the committee of Mass Communication experts used the National University Commission [NUC] Benchmark for Mass Communication in coming up with a unique curriculum for the Department. Consequent upon the completion of the curriculum and other necessary things having been put in place, the Department admitted 35 students in the 2009/2010 session. The pioneer academic members of staff of the Department are: [1] Professor Lai Oso, [2] Mr. Adepoju Tejumaiye and [3] Mr. Achike Okafo.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To provide basic knowledge for understanding and analyzing issues and problems relating to the overall concept and management of Mass Communication. Beneficiaries of the programme are to specialize in any of the following areas:  Print journalism, Broadcast journalism and Public relations and Advertising
  • Beneficiaries are to be equipped with not only the skills and technical know how of Mass Communication, but also properly suited to handle the state of the art technology in communication of the 21st Century
  • Beneficiaries are to be imbued with the necessary knowledge to recognise and define as wellas take appropriate decision with regard to the management of modern Mass Communication.
  • The programme will expose and inculcate in the beneficiaries the real awareness of andsensitivity to cultural factors and conditions that determine the globalization of the new WorldInformation and Communication Order.
  • Beneficiaries will on graduation not only be equipped with the requisite technical know-howof information management but they shall also be equipped with the necessary skills tomanage effectively and efficiently any of these mass media houses and professional outfits ---Newspaper house, Magazine house, Radio station, Television station, Public Relations outfit as well as Advertising outfit.

Admission Requirements

A.    Four-year programme on full time:

A pass at credit level in at least five subjects which must include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics at S.S.C.E/ G.C.E O/Level at not more than two sittings.

Any other acceptable equivalent qualification recognised by Caleb University.

B.    Three–year programme on full time

Three A/Level passes at not more than two sittings

Any other acceptable equivalent qualification recognised by Caleb University
