114 research papers presented as Caleb University holds 2024 Disruptive Innovation Conference

At least 114 research papers were presented at Caleb University’s disruptive innovation conference held this week at the institution’s campus in Imota, Lagos.

The conference which brought together scholars and professionals from within and outside the university was aimed at tackling some of the most pressing challenges plaguing society through technological innovation.

The Caleb University 2024 Disruptive Innovation Conference (CUDIC) with the theme: “Leveraging Technological Innovations to Create The New Normal World,” was organized in collaboration with Lancaster University, the United Kingdom, and the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), South Africa.

The three-day conference took place from October 28-30 and it featured a post-graduate colloquium, keynote paper presentations, workshops, and break-out sessions.

In his brief remark, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, welcomed the participants to the conference.

He also commended the organisers for successfully putting the programme together.

Some government agencies and professional bodies, including the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIBN), and Federal Internal Revenue Service (FIRS), also sent their goodwill messages about the conference.

The Executive Vice Chairman of LIRS, Mr. Ayo Subair, commended the university for coming up with the idea at this critical time in the country’s history.

Subair, represented by one of the agency officials, Mr. Yusuf Erinjogunola, said: “CUDIC 2024 is a significant platform bringing together scholars, researchers, and opinion leaders to tackle issues bedeviling our society.

“The conference theme resonates strongly with the needs of the rapidly evolving world.”

For his part, the CITN President, Barr. Olusola Agbeniyi expressed delight with Caleb University’s role in advancing teaching and research, especially on taxation in the country.

He was represented at the conference by the body’s first female Registrar, Mrs. Folake Osho.

The University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation, Strategy and Administration (RISA), Prof. Olalekan Asikhia, set the ball rolling with his presentation on the research process titled:  “Writing Statement of Problem and Literature Review.”

“The problem statement aims to highlight the key issue the research will address. This should be concise and to the point. Researchers can follow a two-step approach: first, think about the content of the problem statement, and then organize the writing framework,” the Professor of Business Administration noted.

In her keynote paper presentation, Director of Programmes and Partnership, Innov 8 International, Israel, Neta Hanien, pointed out that disruptive innovation is about prioritizing user needs.

She said: “Disruptive innovation, as defined by Clayton Christensen is an innovation that disrupts complex systems, including economic and business-related processes.

“It transforms expensive or highly sophisticated products or services—previously accessible to a high-end or more-skilled segment of consumers—to those more affordable and accessible to a broader population.

“With disruptive innovation, organisations identify people’s needs and use local content to resolve problems.”

Other facilitators at the conference were Prof. Kehinde Ogunniran, dean of the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS), his counterpart in the College of Environmental and Management Sciences (COLENSMA), Prof. Oluwole Alagbe, and Dr. Goodluck Nnorom, head of the Business Administration Department.
