The maiden edition of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup at Caleb University concluded on a high note, delivering an exhilarating finale that captivated students and faculty alike. Spanning from Monday, May 27th, to Friday, June 7th, the tournament marked a significant milestone, bringing together participants from various departments and faculties to display their sporting prowess and competitive spirit.
The final day was a thrilling spectacle, filled with intense matches and unexpected turns. The third-place matches set an electrifying tone for the day, followed by a riveting clash between the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) teams and the highly anticipated final match between International Relations & Political Science and Business Administration.
In the DVC face-off, the DVC Academy team squared off against the DVC Research team, with the latter clinching a narrow 1-0 victory. Dr. Goodluck, a player for the DVC Academy team, emphasized the importance of such events for the health and well-being of staff, beyond the rigors of daily academic activities.
Reflecting on the tournament, the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Nosa Owens-Ibie, expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a very exciting time for us at Caleb University. This maiden Cup has been an eye-opener. We’ve seen enthusiastic participation from both students and staff, and it’s been a lot of fun. We are thrilled and I sincerely hope this continues every year.”
International Relations Clinches Football Title
The final match between International Relations & Political Science and Business Administration was a highlight of the tournament, with International Relations securing a 2-1 victory. Teslim Umar, the tournament’s highest goal scorer, added to his impressive tally, finishing with six goals and leading his team to triumph in the football competition.
Computer Science & Cyber Security Team Emerges Overall Winners
Demonstrating exceptional talent and teamwork, the Computer Science & Cyber Security team emerged as the overall champions of the VC’s Cup 2024. They dominated the indoor games, securing victories in male and female basketball, male volleyball, and female table tennis, alongside individual awards.
Vice Chancellor Commendation
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, lauded the achievements of the participants, remarking, “Our male and female players have shown exceptional talent. They have the potential to surpass renowned athletes like Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala.”
