Caleb University’s Prof Alagbe recommends measures to reposition architectural education in Nigeria

On Friday, October 18, 2024, Prof. Oluwole Alagbe, the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences and Management (COLENSMA), Caleb University, Lagos, recommended a competency certification for architectural teachers in the country.

He made the call at the University’s 9th Inaugural Lecture at its Multi-purpose Hall in Imota, Lagos.

Prof. Alagbe, who explored ways to reposition architectural education in the country, also canvassed unified staffing requirements by the National University Council (NUC) and the industry’s regulators, the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) to improve the teaching of the subject in tertiary institutions.

Other measures include monitoring compliance with staff/ratio and the creation of institutional niches in the institutions’ curriculum.

“Repositioning architectural education in Nigeria for global relevance requires concerted efforts of all stakeholders. Globalisation promotes homogenisation and standardization in an atmosphere of an aggressive free world of the survival of the fittest in every sphere of life, architecture inclusive.

“Globalisation of practices seems to be to the advantage of the nations of the global north and against the global south because of the level of economic and technological developments.

“Therefore, repositioning architecture education in Nigeria for global relevance lies in identifying niches that are peculiar to different zones of the country and promoting them globally by blending them with modern architecture using digital tools,” the varsity don stated.

Earlier in his brief remark, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, welcomed the audience to the inaugural lecture, the first in the 2024/25 academic session.

He said: “Today is the day the Lord has made. This 9th inaugural lecture is the first in the new academic session and the first from the Department of Architecture.

“It may interest you that our inaugural lectures have been planned till October next year. This shows organisation.”
